Thai and Bangladeshi buyers visit Myanmar for coconuts

Buyers from Thailand and Bangladesh have even come to make purchases of Myanmar coconut inside the country through networking with local traders, according to coconut traders.

“Traders from Thailand and Bangladesh have come to the local market to buy coconut. So, coconuts have become scarce in the local market as a result of high foreign demand. Coconuts are mainly produced in Ayeyawady Region as well as from Mawlamyine. Coconuts from there are also reportedly exported to overseas markets,” said the owner of the Ma Phyu Lone coconut trading in Meiktila township.

Despite an increase in foreign demand, the coconut market still needs to rely more on domestic consumption due to rising transportation and labour charges.

“At present, the major buyer is Bangladesh, though there are Thai buyers,” he said.

A virtual meeting to present the prospects of the coconut market, which has been promising as an export item, was held at Myanmar Trade Promotion in April. — Thit Taw/ZS
