The Tokyo Metropolitan Government says it confirmed 31,593 new cases of coronavirus infection on Tuesday.

This is the first time in three days that the daily tally in the capital has topped 30,000.

The figure was up by more than 20,000 from a week earlier. The spike may be due in part to a low level of testing during a three-day weekend that included Monday of last week.

The seven-day average through Tuesday came in at 28,866.3. That was up 78.8 percent from a week before.

Tokyo officials reported five deaths.

They also said the number of seriously ill patients who are on ventilators or ECMO heart-lung machines stood at 21.
