Tornadoes kill at least 19 people in U.S. state of Tennessee: official

Tornadoes have killed at least 19 people in the U.S. state of Tennessee, an emergency management official said on Tuesday.

The fatalities took place across four Tennessee counties, according to Tennessee Emergency Management Community Relations Officer Maggie Hannan, cited by local newspaper The Tennessean.

Besides, the tornadoes reportedly shredded at least 40 buildings and cut power to thousands of homes and businesses.

Counties with the greatest impacts include Davidson, Wilson, and Putnam.

Nashville Mayor John Cooper told The Tennessean that damage across the state capital is "significant."

A state of emergency has been declared in Tennessee.

U.S. President Donald Trump tweeted Tuesday morning that they "will continue to monitor the developments."
