ACCORDING to the market sources, there are 10 menu items created from traditional Myanmar food, Poneyaygyi (fermented horse gram paste), sold in Bagan.
These menu items include fried pork Poneyaygyi rice, fried chicken Poneyaygyi rice, fried pork Poneyaygyi noodles, fried chicken Poneyaygyi noodles, pork Poneyaygyi curry, chicken Poneyaygyi curry, pork Poneyaygyi steamed rice, fried pork Poneyaygyi vegetable rice, Poneyaygyi vermicelli, pork Poneyaygyi clay pot, and Chinese and Thai dishes, according to Ko Nay Myo Hlaing, who created them. “In the past, many restaurants in Bagan-NyaungU sold only three types of Poneyaygyi curries- pork-mixed curry, salad rice and salad Poneyaygyi. We have developed many new menus in the five years since we opened our shop because we have our unique taste and new ways. My curries are not pre-cooked, but served hot and freshly cooked when guests order,” he continued.
The fried pork Poneyaygyi was the first to succeed, and the rest new items followed suit among tourists. The pork Poneyaygyi steamed rice in a clay pot is now the most popular – about 90 out of 100 like it. The prices range from a few thousand to K3,000 to K9,000, he said.
Hot and sour pork Poneyaygyi noodles will be his eleventh creation as a new menu item, he added. – MT/ZN
