Tropical Storm Khanun is heading north on the Korean Peninsula after making landfall in South Korea, leaving at least one person dead.

The South Korean government says more than 10,000 people had evacuated to shelters by noon on Thursday.

Authorities are warning people to stay on the alert as mudslides and flooded roads are being reported across the country.

The Korean Meteorological Administration says Khanun is expected to get close to Seoul on Thursday night and reach North Korea between Thursday and Friday.

Rescue operations are reportedly underway. South Korea's public broadcaster KBS aired footage showing a man being rescued by police officers from a flooded road.

Last month, more than 50 people were killed or went missing in floods and landslides caused by torrential rains in South Korea. Authorities are warning that the tropical storm might bring more damage while the repair work is still underway.
