US President Donald Trump says he's standing with the people of Hong Kong, following a landslide victory for the territory's pro-democracy camp. That side made huge gains in Sunday's local district council elections but tensions remain.
Trump told reporters at the White House on Tuesday, "We want to see it go well in Hong Kong and I think it will. I think that President Xi can make that happen and I know him and I know he would like to make it happen."
But Trump did not say whether he'll sign a bill supporting Hong Kong's calls for democracy.
Beijing panned the bill, warning Washington to stay out of its affairs.
China's foreign ministry is demanding the US stop the bill from becoming law.
Beijing has not directly commented on the results of Sunday's vote. But it continues to blame Hong Kong's current unrest on foreign interference.
