Two people have died and three others went missing as a boat sank in the Taninthayi River after hitting a tree stump in Kyunsu Township, Taninthayi Region.

The accident took place in the Taninthayi River near Santhit Village in Kyunsu Township at about 2 p.m. on 22 September. A boat carrying 16 people from Waryit Village who came back to the village after participating in a funeral service hit a tree stump and sank in the Taninthayi River. Five women went missing in the incident.
Three missing women were found dead at about 30 minutes later and retrieved their bodies from the water. Firefighters, local authorities and villagers are carrying out search and rescue operations for the missing people.
