UNION Election Commission held a meeting with political parties and civil society organizations related with the elections sector in Yangon yesterday over compilation of voters list for the 2020 general elections.

Present at the meeting were U Myint Naing, Member of the Union Election Commission (Yangon Region In-charge), U Kyi Myint, Chairman of the Yangon Region Election Sub-Commission and party, departmental officials, representatives of 15 political parties in Yangon Region, representatives from 14 CSOs, Mr. Paul Gueri Obe of the International Foundation for Electoral System-IFES, chairmen and officials of the district and township election sub-commissions in Yangon Region.

First, UEC Member U Myint Naing briefed about existing works for the elections, the programmes for the compilation of voters list for the 2020 general elections and the role of political parties and CSOs in holding the elections.

Afterwards, Chairman of the Yangon Region Election Sub-Commission U Kyi Myint briefed about implementing the Strategy 2019-2022 while Secretary of the Yangon Region Sub-Commission about measures taken for collecting voters list in the Yangon Region. At the meeting, UEC Member U Myint Naing answered to questions raised by those present. The UEC started its work on compiling voters list in June, 2019, for the 2020 general elections. According to the UEC, General Administration Departments in townships will collect data on residents living actually in wards or villagers as a first step for compilation of voters list. The UEC has stressed the importance of cooperation from the people in collecting the data for voters list.
