The 4th Myanmar National Conference on Earth Sciences (MNCES, 2020) was hosted at Toungoo University yesterday morning via videoconferencing.
The conference was participated by Union Minister for Education Dr Myo Thein Gyi, Deputy Minister for Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation Dr Ye Myint Swe, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, the Deputy Permanent Secretary, Directors-General, Rectors, Professors, the Myanmar Geosciences Society Chairperson, researchers and guests.
During the conference, the Union Minister said that people are facing greater challenges of natural disasters with the benefits of technological advancement.
The theme of the 4th Myanmar National Conference on Earth Sciences is “Exploring the information of geology and earth sciences through comprehensive research towards the sustainable development of our unique environment.”
The Union Minister said that the numbers of research papers submitted to Myanmar National Conferences on Earth Sciences have been increasing year by year. 103 research papers were submitted in 2017; 184 papers in 2018; and 177 papers in 2019. A total of 240 papers will be submitted in the MNCES-2020.
The research papers focus on the exploration of natural resources aimed for social development, systematic extraction and uses of natural resources, technologies for minimizing the impacts on the natural environment, and sustainable development.
He called on the researchers to effectively work together to improve research results and exchange views with international universities.
At present, the Ministry of Education has encouraged Myanmar universities to collaborate with experts and international science organizations such as the ASEAN University Network, the Erasmus + University Network in order to build the capacity of teachers and students. He said that the lifeblood of the world is the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and SDG-6 “Clean Water and Sanitation”, SDG-7 “Affordable and Clean Energy”, “SDG-11 Sustainable Cities and Communities”, SDG-13 “Climate Action”, SDG-14 “Life Below Water”, SDG-15 “Life on Land” are closely related to the Conference on Earth Sciences. In his closing speech, the Union Minister called on researchers to carry out quality research that will be practical, effective, transparent and in line with the Myanmar Sustainable Development Plan (2018-2030).
The 4th Myanmar National Conference on Earth Sciences has been held from 28-29 December.
