Households from four wards in Amarapura Township were evacuated to a safe place on 19 July night after the water from Ayeyawady River likely to inundate the wards following a sluice gate broke at the Shwe Gae wastewater treatment plant on Mandalay-Sagaing Road in Yin Taw village-tract, Amarapura Township, Mandalay region.
The Union Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Dr Win Myat Aye visited the flood relief camps yesterday morning. He donated cash to buy rice and food for the flood victims, as well as provided COVID-19 preventive supplies.
Following the inundation of the river, Mandalay-Sagaing Road was damaged and the water from Ayeyawady River flew into Nankak Lake. The Union Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Dr Win Myat Aye also supervised and coordinated activities to stop the river water flowing into the lake.
The Deputy Minister U Soe Aung, the Security and Border Affairs Minister of Mandalay Region government, the regional Social Affairs Minister, regional MPs, the Director General of the Disaster Management Department, the Deputy Director General of the General Administration Department of Mandalay Region, Tatmadaw, Myanmar Police Force, Myanmar Fire Services Department and social organizations also visited the location and provided assistance for flood victims.
Firstly, the Union Minister Dr Win Myat Aye visited the temporary relief camps located at Shin Pin Set Thwar pagoda, Moe Kaung Myat Swar Phayar Religious Hall and Kyan Tann Religious Hall. The Union Minister made remarks related to prevention of COVID-19, offered the flood victims encouragement, gave K8,471,400 to buy rice for 4,034 victims of 1,448 households, and provided masks as well as soaps.
Afterwards, the Union Minister visited and inspected the situations of the embankment of the Nankak Lake and the damaged section of Mandalay-Sagaing Road. Then, he discussed with the Security and Border Affairs Minister of Mandalay regional government, the regional Social Affairs Minister and the Deputy Director-General of the General Administration Department of Mandalay Region about activities on stopping river water flowing into the area.
Currently, with the help of the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement, social organizations are laying sand bags near low embankments of Nankak Lake to prevent overflow of water into nearby homes.
