Leader of the Myanmar Delegation and Union Minister for the Office of the State Counsellor U Kyaw Tint Swe arrived back in Yangon on 9 October 2019 after attending the General Debate of the 74th Session of the United Nations General Assembly held in New York, and paying an official visit to the Republic of Cuba as the Special Envoy of the Government of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar.
During the high-level week of the 74th Session from 24 to 30 September, Leader of the Delegation Union Minister for the Office of the State Counsellor U Kyaw Tint Swe delivered a statement at the General Debate on 28 September.
While attending the UN General Assembly in New York, Union Minister U Kyaw Tint Swe had separate meetings with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Viet Nam Mr Pham Binh Minh, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Thailand Mr Don Pramudwinai, US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Mr David Hale, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Mr Filippo Grandi, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Mr Peter Maurer, and Chairman of the Universal Peace Federation (UPF) Mr Thomas G Walsh.
Union Minister U Kyaw Tint Swe attended the Myanmar-China-Bangladesh informal trilateral meeting held at the UN headquarters on 23 September on the sideline of the General Assembly. Also present at the meeting were State Councilor and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China Mr Wang Yi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh Dr A K Abdul Momen and United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy to Myanmar Ms. Christine Schraner Burgener. During the meeting, Union Minister U Kyaw Tint Swe said that the only way forward to address the issue of displaced persons is a cordial dialogue between the two countries and reiterated preparation and readiness of Myanmar to resolve the issue based on bilateral agreements signed between Myanmar and Bangladesh. The meeting reviewed the progress and preparation made by the two countries in the repatriation work and agreed to resolve the issue through negotiation including promoting economic development and people’s livelihood in Rakhine State.
Moreover, Union Minister U Kyaw Tint Swe attended the Welcoming State Luncheon by Secretary-General and the reception hosted by the President of the United States on 24 September and working lunch hosted by United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Envoy to Myanmar Ms Christine Schraner Burgener on 30 September.
After attending the General Debate of the 74th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, Union Minister for the Office of the State Counsellor U Kyaw Tint Swe paid an official visit to Cuba as the Special Envoy of the Government of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar from 2 to 5 October 2019.
During the visit to Cuba, Union Minister U Kyaw Tint Swe called on Vice President of the Council of State Mr Roberto Morales Ojeda and had separate meetings with Minister of Public Health of Cuba Mr Jose Angel Portal Miranda, Minster of Foreign Affairs of Cuba Mr Bruno Eduardo Rodriguez Parrilla. Union Minister also attended the reception to launch the official establishment of Myanmar Embassy in Havana on 4 October and gave remarks.
The Myanmar delegation led by Union Minister U Kyaw Tint Swe left Jose Marti International Airport in Havana for New York on 5 October and arrived back in New York’s Newark Airport on the same day.
Alternative Chairman of the Myanmar Delegation and Union Minister for International Cooperation U Kyaw Tin participated in the High-level events namely, Climate Action Summit, High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development. He also attended the Global Call to Protect Religious Freedom Side event, 70 years of the Geneva Conventions Side Event, Commemoration of the thirtieth anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), Ministerial Meeting of Non-aligned Movement (NAM), 43rd Annual Meeting of Ministers for Foreign Affairs of G-77, Informal ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (IAMM) and 6th ASEAN-Pacific Alliance Ministerial Meeting, ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting with the United Nations Secretary-General and the President of the 74th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (AUMM).
Union Minister U Kyaw Tin held separate meetings with Minister of Foreign Affairs of Australia the Hon Marise Payne, Minister of Development Cooperation of Denmark Mr Rasmus Prehn, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Norway Ms Eriksen Søreide, Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs of Venezuela Mr. Ruben Dario Molina, United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Representative on Children and Armed Conflicts Ms Virginia Gamba and Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict Ms Pramila Patten, European Union Special Representative on Human Rights Mr Eamon Gilmore and President of World Economic Forum (WEF) Mr Borge Brende.
During the meeting with Minister for Foreign Affairs of Norway on 26 September, the Union Minister signed the Memorandum of Understanding to establish Foreign Offices Consultations between Myanmar and Norway.
Union Minister U Kyaw Tin also attended the reception hosted by European Union on 24 September and Luncheon by Secretary-General of the International Seabed Authority on 25 September.
Union Minister U Kyaw Tin presented Myanmar’s Instrument of Ratification of the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the Involvement of Children in Armed Conflict (CRC-OPAC) to the United Nations Secretary-General who is the depositary, through Chief of the United Nations Office of Legal Affairs during the United Nations Treaty Event of 2019 held on 27 September.
Union Minister U Kyaw Tin held an interview with VOA Burmese Programme on 30 September. He also received Ms Debra Eisenman, Managing Director of Asia Society Policy Institute on 3 October 2019 and exchanged views on recent developments on Myanmar’s democratic transition and bilateral relations between the Myanmar and the United States.
