A ceremony to launch the Population Estimates: 1983-2014 Report was held at the Park Royal Hotel in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday morning.

Union Minister U Thein Swe, the Chairman of Central Census Commission, made an opening remark, saying that the figure of population in 2014 Census was much higher than the estimated numbers of 30 years ago. And that the Department of Population prepared the Population Estimates: 1983-2014 Report with technical assistance of UNFPA and World Bank and participations of local and international population experts.

The report was based on the population figure of 1983 and survey results on birth rate, mortality rate, immigrant rate and UN figures.

The Union Minister added the report is very close to the number of population in 2014 Census and the UN figures, and that the report would be very beneficial to the country and users of these statistics by reviewing population and socioeconomic status of the nation.

UNFPA’s Country Representative Mr Ramanathan Balakrishnan talked about supports of their agency in producing the report, followed by explanation of Acting Director-General of Department of Population U Win Zaw Aung and officials about the report and its finding.—MNA (Translated by Aung Khin)
