THE Unity in Action ceremony was held to commemorate the first anniversary of the Manda­lay earthquake at the Wyndham Grand Hotel in Yangon on the evening of 28 March.

 

A minute’s silence was first observed in memory of the victims of the Mandalay earth­quake, accompanied by sirens and bowed heads.

 

This was followed by a speech from Professor Dr Myo Nyunt, President of the My­anmar Red Cross Society, and remarks by Ms Nadia Khoury, Head of Delegation of the Inter­national Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, and Mr Xavier Collard de Macquerh, Head of Programmes and Pre­vention at the International Committee of the Red Cross.

 

Executive Professor Dr Tin Maung Hlaing then highlighted the earthquake response and rehabilitation work carried out over the past year, as well as cooperation with partner Red Cross societies, accompanied by a video presentation showcasing volunteers’ support.

 

Vice-President Dr Daw Tin Tin Lay, Executive Professor Dr Tin Maung Hlaing, and Professor Dr Daw Yi Yi Tin then presented certificates of appreciation to 15 Red Cross volunteers who had participated in the earthquake response and rehabilitation ef­forts.

 

The ceremony was attend­ed by executives, chairpersons, and officials from the Region and State Red Cross Supervisory Committees, deputy general sec­retaries, assistant general secre­taries, and directors, as well as representatives from the Inter­national Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the International Committee of the Red Cross, partner Red Cross societies, Red Cross volunteers, local and international donors, and invitees. — MNA/MKKS
