She added the University was established on 1 December 1920, and it 100th anniversary will mark on 1 December 2020. The joyous celebration of centennial has begun taking place, and the activities are expected to increase gradually during this period.
She also remarked the University of Yangon has possessed the great dignity of the country, and can be regarded as the mother of all the universities in the country.
When it was first established, its organizational structures imitated those of England universities. It was also one of the best universities in the Southeast Asia. Nearby Inya Lake, convocation hall, the large dioecious tree (Thit Pote Pin), Adipati Road and its large campus are its significant features to become one of the most attractive universities in the region.
The State Counsellor continued that the government is renovating and upgrading the university during its centennial period by forming work committees for a master plan which is being implemented by a steering committee chaired by the Union Minister for Education.
To promote education quality and physical structures, a software committee and a hardware committee were formed.
She also recognized the adaptation of master plan for the university, including its organizational structure, management, policies and functions, to suit the developing situations. In accordance with the Myanmar Education Law 2015, the University of Yangon would be developed into an autonomous university soon after making preparations.
In the aspect of education reform, a faculty system will be established, and its curricula will be reviewed and developed. Its curricula and policy reform are intended for ensuring quality improvement, socioeconomic development, effective cooperation with international universities and easy student mobility.
Reform programme of the university includes the establishments of internal quality assurance system, applied research activities, internationalizations in cooperation with foreign universities and developing an e-library.
The State Counsellor also explained promoting physical structures of the university in developing a clean and safe campus, upgrading roads, creating a greening area along the Adipati Road without damaging its environment and historic buildings in accordance with the wills of new generation students, its alumni and the common people.
She added the clean water supply, flow of water, drainage system and safe wiring installations are also included in upgrading physical structures of the university.
In academic sector, the existing curricula of university will be upgraded to meet the needs in socioeconomics and education sectors of the country. The curricula reforms could help in cooperation with international institutions and student mobility, and could generate competent human resources for the country, while a credit transfer system would soon be developed for easy cooperation with foreign universities in student mobility.
The State Counsellor remarked promotion of education quality is very fundamental to upgrading the University of Yangon, adding that a university is an educative institution intended for developing good people.
She also concluded that education could help in human development and making right decisions.
The State Counsellor commented it is not possible to judge a subject is better than any other subjects as all of these are useful, and advised to promote all the subjects in developing education sector. The values of subjects depend on the users of these subjects. It is expected to apply these subjects properly.
She also said the government will support harmonious development of subjects and generating capable students who could create a developed country.
She remarked that Myanmar is still a developing country, and that young people are responsible for the development of the country, and they should be proud of this duty.
