NATURAL disasters inevitably bring widespread loss, damage, and human suffering. The recent devastating earthquake along the Sagaing Fault in Myanmar caused severe destruction across towns and villages, leaving many in desperate need of essentials such as clean water, food, clothing, and emergency supplies.

In the wake of this tragedy, regional governments, local communities, and international donors have mobilized swiftly to support affected populations. Medical teams are treating the injured, while search and rescue efforts continue to save those still trapped under collapsed structures. Remarkably, some victims have managed to survive for several days before being rescued, underscoring the urgency of coordinated and timely humanitarian efforts.

Myanmar has long been known for its culture of generosity, with individuals and groups stepping forward in times of crisis. Today, that spirit is more evident than ever as citizens unite to aid earthquake victims. Additionally, rescue teams from various countries have arrived to assist in search operations, while donor nations provide financial and material aid to support both immediate relief and long-term recovery.

Humanitarian assistance transcends national, religious, political, and cultural boundaries. Its true purpose lies in alleviating suffering, enhancing quality of life, and supporting the rehabilitation of affected communities. Upholding this spirit requires a commitment to four core principles: humanity, impartiality, non-discrimination, and independence.

The recent earthquake is a stark reminder that the planet faces a growing number of disasters – both natural and climate-related. From floods and droughts to forest fires and extreme weather, these crises are becoming more frequent and severe due to climate change. In addition to earthquakes and tsunamis, other disasters such as landslides and volcanic eruptions continue to take a heavy toll on human life.

Statistics reveal the alarming impact of these events. Between 1998 and 2017, earthquakes alone caused around 750,000 deaths and injured over 125 million people worldwide. In 2011, the Tohoku earthquake in Japan claimed more than 15,000 lives, while the 2015 Nepal earthquake left over 9,000 dead. More recently, the 2022 Türkiye-Syria earthquake resulted in over 60,000 fatalities.

In response to such tragedies, humanitarian action plays a critical role in offering hope and recovery. Whenever any disaster falls, Myanmar does not delay in providing assistance to the affected areas and donating aid. Donations mean meritorious deeds dedicated to the recurring circle, as well as assistance for the victims on humanitarian grounds. If so, those donors can enjoy happiness from their activities. As such, individuals have to provide aid for the victims of different hardships on humanitarian grounds as much as possible.
