CONTINUOUS rainfall in Hpakant Township, Kachin State, with re­corded precipitation of 6.89 inches has caused the Uru Creek and local creeks to rise, leading to flooding in several low-ly­ing wards on the morning of 21 June, according to reports.

 

Overflow triggered by torrential rains into Mawwun Creek inun­dated areas 4 and 5 of Mawwun Ward by about one foot and area 6 by about two and a half feet. Floodwaters also reached about three feet in Hnget­pyawtaw Ward and Mashi Khtaung Ward and about two feet in Ayemya Thaya Ward.

 

At the Uru Creek wa­ter gauge near Kansee Village in Lonkhin Vil­lage-tract, water levels had risen to about three feet, exceeding the des­ignated danger level of about two feet.

 

Members of the township management and administration com­mittee inspected the situation and arranged small boats to ensure transport for residents living in flooded areas. Township departments, ward administrative bod­ies and social welfare organizations have also made preparations to is­sue early warnings and carry out evacuations and rescue work if water levels continue to rise.
