US President Donald Trump held telephone talks on Sunday with French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson about heightened tensions in the Middle East.

The French presidential office says Macron expressed solidarity with the United States.

Macron reportedly expressed the view that any move by Iran to retaliate for the killing of General Qassem Soleimani could further worsen an already unstable situation, and said that Tehran must exercise restraint.

Johnson released a statement after phone conversations with Trump, Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Johnson said given the leading role Soleimani "has played in actions that have led to the deaths of thousands of innocent civilians and western personnel, we will not lament his death."

He also noted that all calls for retaliation would "simply lead to more violence in the region and they are in no one's interest."
