US slaps new sanctions on Iran's nuclear agency

31 January

The US Department of State has revealed that it has imposed new sanctions on Iran's nuclear organization and the organization's chief officer. It says it has also sent medical drugs to Iran to help people in the country.

US Special Representative for Iran Brian Hook spoke to reporters on Thursday. He renewed his criticism of Iran's nuclear program. Hook noted that Iran has exceeded limits placed on its uranium stockpile and enrichment levels.

He then announced that sanctions have been imposed on Iran's Atomic Energy Organization and its chief officer Ali-Akbar Salehi. The sanctions include an embargo on dealings with Americans.

Hook also said the US government has completed the sale and delivery of cancer and transplant drugs to Iran. The drugs are difficult to obtain in the country because of US sanctions.

A spokesperson for Iran's Atomic Energy Organization, Behrouz Kamalvandi, told a local news agency that the imposition of such sanctions is a political game being played by Washington. He said the sanctions have no value and are childish measures. He added that they will have no impact on Iran's nuclear program.

Kamalvandi also said that the US has withdrawn from the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran and is not in a position to make any comments about Iran's actions.
