Vice President U Myint Swe, Patron of the Central Committee for Convening the 72nd Anniversary of Martyrs’ Day, delivered a speech at the central committee’s first coordination meeting held at the President’s Office in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday.

Opening remarks

In his speech, the Vice President said the Martyrs’ Day ceremony is held annually to keep alive the memories of the fallen martyrs, including national leader Bogyoke Aung San, who lost their lives on 19 July 1947. He said the ceremony aims to awaken patriotism in youths and let them understand the lives, blood and sweat sacrificed for independence. He remarked that we have now reached the 72nd anniversary for this momentous commemoration.
 

The Vice President also explained about the formation and constitution of the central committee and its related committees.

Ensuring each committee succeeds its tasks

He said ‘soon’ offerings to honour the martyrs would be held in Nay Pyi Taw and Yangon. He urged all relevant committees to work closely with the Ministry of Religious Affairs and Culture, Nay Pyi Taw Council and Yangon Region cabinet to ensure the donations were carried out without any delays at the national level.
 

The Vice President also instructed the committees to ensure that all planning for the commemoration ceremony at the Martyrs’ Mausoleum goes along without any setbacks.
 

He also urged participants to carry out rehearsals for flag hoisting and saluting ceremonies at the Secretariat Building in Yangon and to make arrangements for opening the Secretariat Building’s meeting room, where General Aung San and other leaders were assassinated 72 years ago on 19 July.
 

The Vice President also urged the security committee to coordinate with others to carry out its 12 tasks successfully.
 

He also urged the Ministry of Information to make arrangements for covering articles and interviews on Martyrs’ Day, to conduct essay contests, to broadcast and publish Bogyoke Aung San’s speeches, Martyrs’ Day commemorative songs and to show documentary films in the state-run broadcasts and print media.

Committee reports

Following the Vice President’s speech, Union Minister Thura U Aung Ko reported on the formation of the committees, preparations made, and the progress of assigned tasks.
 

Next, Chief Minister U Phyo Min Thein and Mayor U Maung Maung Soe, who are Chairman and Secretary of the Working Committee for Convening the 72nd Anniversary of Martyrs’ Day respectively, reported on the progress of each subcommittee and future tasks.
 

Deputy Minister for the Ministry of Home Affairs Maj-Gen Aung Thu then explained the security preparations made and other tasks.
 

This was followed by the remaining attendees reporting on the progress of their relevant committee.
The meeting came to an end with the Vice President giving comments and suggestions to ensure coordination on the various reports after which he delivered the closing speech.
