Organizers say more than a million people demonstrated on Sunday to protest a bill that would allow suspects to be extradited to mainland China to face trial.

After the almost eight hour rally, violence flared up, with some demonstrators knocking down metal fences outside the parliament building. They re-erected them in the middle of the road to conduct a sit-down protest.

Authorities had cleared the area by Monday morning.
Hong Kong's second most senior official, Matthew Cheung, called the violence regrettable.

More protests are likely as pro-democracy groups are calling on people to surround the parliament building unless the government withdraws the bill.
