A volcano has erupted on a small island in southern Italy, reportedly leaving one person dead.

Large-scale eruptions occurred twice from the volcano on the island of Stromboli off the coast of Sicily.

A local volcanological institute says the volcano sent smoke 2,000 meters into the air and spread a cloud of ash over surrounding areas.

Italian media reports say one tourist died and another was injured in the eruption and that some tourists jumped into the sea for safety.

Firefighters extinguished fires caused by lava discharged from the volcano. Italian authorities also sent ships to the island in the event of evacuation of tourists and residents.

The institute says the eruption was the largest since it began monitoring the volcano in 1985.

The island has attracted many tourists because of the volcano's burning crimson lava.
