A Yangon Region electrical sector coordinating meeting between the Ministry of Electricity and Energy, Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (UMFCCI), Myanmar Industries Association (MIA) and officials from industrial zones in Yangon Region was held at the Yangon Electricity Supply Corporation (YESC) office yesterday morning.

At the meeting, Union Minister U Win Khaing said the ministry was building power generation and sub-stations, and laying power lines to provide stable electricity for the people. At the moment, about 3,586 MW of electricity had been generated into the national power grid, while peak usage in Yangon Region was some 1,548.23 MW, which is nearly half of the total generated power. Industrial zones and industries in Yangon Region were utilizing 465.74 MW, and arrangements were being made to upgrade infrastructures to fulfill increasing requirements.

For the ministry to help resolve problems faced by industries, industrialists need to openly discuss problems being faced. Next summer, electricity usage in Yangon Region will peak, and the distribution sector will encounter some shortfalls. Industrialists are requested to assist the electricity generation sector by cutting down on electricity usage in early evening hours and, instead, shift usage to late night to early morning graveyard shifts, said the Union Minister.

Also, officials from UMFCCI, MIA and industrial zones in Yangon Region discussed electricity sector investment projects, electricity and power requirements, while the YESC Chief Executive Officer responded to issues brought up during the discussion.
