The authorities began compiling the results for the Yangon City Development Committee elections yesterday evening.

A total of 271 candidates took part in the elections held at 33 townships in the municipal area of Yangon, with 27 candidates contesting for seats on the Yangon City Development Committee, 99 contesting for the post of chairman of the Development Affairs Committee in the respective townships, 74 vying for a single seat on the township Development Affairs Committee, and 72 contesting for two seats on the township Development Affairs Committee.

There are over 3.4 million eligible voters in the 33 townships.

“I cast my vote for those whom I believe to be working in the interest of the people. I want to urge the winners to upgrade the roads and drainage system, because we need to work a lot to change Yangon City,” said Ma Phyu Phyu Tun, a voter from Mayangon Township.

“I believe that I cast my vote for the right person for the right place. This election has been more transparent than previous elections. I want to request the YCDC to clean backyard lanes and remove barriers on pavements,” said U Hmat Gyi from Ward-7 of Kyauktada Township.
