Union Minister for Commerce Dr Than Myint virtually addressed the opening ceremony of Partnership Summit 2020 hosted by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) yesterday afternoon. The Union Minister said that the purpose of the ceremony, “Partnerships for Lives, Livelihood and Growth”, reflects the current state of the global community with the inclusion of trade, investment, development, technology and other vital sectors. He said he believes that there will be opportunities for more assertive communication and business connectivity between the partner business communities.

He urged to share experiences with the digital economy and the more innovative and competitive development models for the new normal in the current context of the COVID-19 crisis when digital technology is increasingly being used in the commercial sectors.

He continued there is a need to increase the cooperation for a stronger economic recovery and to streamline production processes with modern digital technologies by enhancing the involvement of the private sector especially in developing countries and emerging markets that are facing more challenges. He added Myanmar is also developing the Myanmar Economic Recovery and Reform Plan (MERRP) in conjunction with the Myanmar Sustainable Development Plan (MSDP) to respond to the impact of COVID-19 and to revitalize the Myanmar economy in the long run.

He said Myanmar, as an agricultural country, has great potential for trade and investment in agriculture and food production including other important sectors such as fisheries, energy, tourism, manufacturing, handicraft processing (CMP), infrastructure and information technology.

At the ceremony, ministers from Finland, Sri Lanka, the UAE and India, also delivered opening remarks.

The Partnership Summit 2020 will be held from December 15 to 18 for 40 sessions over four days. Ministers from 16 countries, more than 60 heads of international organizations, more than 30 CEOs from global companies and more than 6,000 representatives from over 100 countries will attend the online discussion. The opening ceremony was attended online by the Myanmar Ambassador to India, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Commerce, the directors-general, the deputy directors-general and officials.
