A large whale was found dead and floating in the water near Paekalet labour camp in Wae Kyun village, Kyunsu Township, in Taninthayi Region on 16 December. According to U Nyi Nyi Lin Htut, Director of the Department of Fisheries, the dead whale was found to have been stabbed with something about eight inches in the back of its head in the water near the work camp which is about 0.5 nautical miles from Wae Kyun village and may have died six days ago.
The fish was towed to the cemetery island near Wae Kyun village. It is believed to be a female whale, with about 26 feet long and 12 feet in size and was systematically buried on the island’s sandy beach at low tide. — Si Thura Aung (Kyunsu) (Translated by Ei Phyu Phyu Aung)
