Thaton hatchery provided 1.3 million fingerlings to the licenced fish breeding ponds during the coronavirus pandemic, Mon State Fisheries Department reported. Furthermore, 2.2 million fingerlings are sold at a fairer price to the breeders.

During the 2019-2020 financial year, Thaton hatchery has produced 4.3 million fingerlings (nine species) and added over 800,000 fingerlings to the rivers, creeks, dams, reservoirs and paddy fields.

The hatchery in Thaton Township under Mon State Fisheries Department is carrying out hatching in each season so that the department can sell them to the breeders at lower prices and provide food security. Fingerlings are added into ponds, dams and rivers to ensure plenty of fish resources. The hatchery started hatching of carp and common carp. Fingerlings of rohu are selling well, and they are produced with the process of artificial reproduction. The natural hatching process is found in Tilapia and common carp.

The hatchery ensures that fish production must grow steadily and fish can be bought at a fair price, said U Win Bo, in-charge of Thaton hatchery.

The breeders from Paung and Mawlamyine mostly come to purchase the fingerlings at the hatchery.

Those from Kayin State and Bago Region also purchased them.
