At a seminar on the topic of “Sludge Utilization as a Construction Material Fertilizer” held at the Federation of Myanmar Engineering Societies on 30 September, Dr Zaw Win, a member of the Yangon City Development Committee, stated that fertilizer made from sewage sludge has been successfully produced and put to practical use.
By properly storing and processing waste like this, the benefits of saving foreign currency can be realized, and it can address the need for fertilizers in the agricultural sector, as fertilizers are imported from abroad every year using foreign currency. Additionally, it is reported that the environmental damage caused by human waste will be significantly reduced.
To systematically address the problem caused by human waste in most developing countries, a beneficial reuse method was implemented following the 3-R solution method (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) instructed by the Head of State.
“Since the released standard fertilizers have been approved by the Land Use Division, the natural fertilizers at that level can be rest assured for use in the agricultural sector,” said Dr Zaw Win. — TWA/ CT
