The Taninthayi Region, particularly Kawthoung, has witnessed a significant influx of both domestic and international tourists with a total of 105,000 local travellers and 15,000 foreign tourists during the nine-month period spanning from January to September 2023, said Deputy Director U Hlwan Moe of the Taninthayi Region Directorate of Hotels and Tourism.
Traditionally, visitors explore the charming destinations of Dawei, Myeik, Kawthoung, and Bokpyin areas of the Taninthayi Region. To cater to this growing tourism, the region boasts a total of 2,383 rooms distributed across 49 hotels and 11 lodges, offering diverse accommodation options for travellers.
U Hlwan Moe elaborated on the tourism trends, stating, “The Taninthayi Region has seen a substantial influx of visitors, with around 105,000 local travellers and approximately 15,000 foreign tourists visiting in the nine-month period. Among the region’s prominent destinations, Kawthoung stands out as a favorite among Thai tourists, closely followed by Chinese tourists. Their preferences for destinations vary.” He further explained, “Dawei area attracts primarily pilgrims, while Myeik region is currently more appealing to local travellers. These local travellers seek tours that not only encompass pagoda visits but also include sightseeing along maritime routes. In contrast, Kawthoung region is known for its maritime tour offerings.”
Currently, the Myeik Archipelagos, comprising more than 800 small and large islands, have captured the attention of both local and foreign tourists. Among these islands, more than 40 are accessible to visitors, with some reachable within a day’s trip from Myeik. Additionally, travellers can explore eight islands of them in a four-night and five-day excursion. As tourism continues to thrive in the Taninthayi Region, the stunning natural beauty, cultural richness, and diverse offerings of these destinations are expected to draw even more travellers in the coming months. — ASH/TTA
