UNION Minister for Natural Resources and Environment Conservation U Ohn Win attended an event on reducing carbon emissions and preserving natural forests to limit climate change organized by the Korea Forest Service, a South Korean government agency specializing in forestry, at Feria de Madrid’s exhibition centre in Spain on 4 December.

Speaking at the event, the Union Minister highlighted Myanmar’s efforts to reduce climate change by drafting appropriate policies and cooperating with the international community, in addition to signing relevant UN Conventions. He also mentioned Myanmar’s 10-year reforestation plan and said he believes it will also raise the socio-economic livelihood of the local residents. He then thanked the ROK agency for providing technical and financial assistance. Next, the Director of the Yezin Forestry Research Department, under the Forestry Department, explained the facts and experiences of Myanmar’s project to reduce carbon emissions from deforestation and forest conservation. Additionally, officals from Cambodia and ROK also explained their REDD+ implementations, experiences and objectives, and experts from CIFOR and Wildlife Works recounted their international experiences. The Union Minister also attended a panel discussion on opportunities in renewable energy sources to reduce climate change at the World Wide Fund for Nature Pavilion, New Zealand’s discussion on Impact of Climate Change on Pacific Blue Economics, and England’s research paper reading session on climate change and consequences on aquatic life. — MNA (Translated by Zaw Htet Oo)
