The Union Election Commission, in corporation with the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy and Political Parties of Finland for Democracy (NIMD/Demo Finland), organizes the Conflict Resolution Training (Core Mediation) course.

The opening ceremony of the course was held at the training hall of UEC in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday morning, and it was attended by members of UEC and its officials, trainees from State/Region Election Commission offices, representatives of the NIMD/Demo Finland and the trainers.

UEC Chairman U Hla Thein made a speech at the ceremony, saying that the course is aimed for capacity-building of UEC staff for knowledge and experience in holding elections, and that the UEC also formed mediation committees in the previous elections to be able to mediate disputes, challenges without delay.

He added the Strategic Plan (2019-2022) of UEC could handle possible disputes, complaints and objections at all the steps of 2020 General Election.

The training course will focus on negotiation and mediation techniques and practices of a neutral organization through international experiences.

The UEC Chairman concluded his speech with advice to practice mediations in line with election laws, bylaws, orders and directives, code of conduct for political parties and Hluttaw candidates as the fundamental principle for mediation is to ensure trust-building and mutual understanding.—MNA (Translated by Aung Khin)
