ACCORDING to the Ministry of Education, over 8,500 indi­viduals who were illiterate and out of school received educa­tional instruction nationwide between January 2023 and April 2024.

 

During this period, 78,397 learners were educated under the basic literacy programme, while 7,434 learners participat­ed in continuing education in­itiatives.

 

 

The ministry revealed that for the basic literacy pro­gramme, more than 7,800 in­structors facilitated learning for 78,397 students across over 5,600 learning centres. Similar­ly, under the continuing educa­tion programme, over 690 in­structors taught 7,434 students at more than 1,400 centres.

 

In addition to traditional instruction, mobile applica­tions were utilized with the support of the Ministry of Sci­ence and Technology, enabling the delivery of basic literacy education via mobile phones.

 

The Ministry of Education established the Department of Alternative Education and Lifelong Learning in 2016 to ef­fectively implement alternative education initiatives.

 

According to Myanmar’s 2014 national census, approx­imately 2.7 million school-age children were unable to attend school due to various circum­stances. Additionally, there were 4.1 million illiterate youth and adults aged 15 and above. — ASH/MKKS
