ACCORDING to the Ministry of Education, over 8,500 individuals who were illiterate and out of school received educational instruction nationwide between January 2023 and April 2024.
During this period, 78,397 learners were educated under the basic literacy programme, while 7,434 learners participated in continuing education initiatives.
The ministry revealed that for the basic literacy programme, more than 7,800 instructors facilitated learning for 78,397 students across over 5,600 learning centres. Similarly, under the continuing education programme, over 690 instructors taught 7,434 students at more than 1,400 centres.
In addition to traditional instruction, mobile applications were utilized with the support of the Ministry of Science and Technology, enabling the delivery of basic literacy education via mobile phones.
The Ministry of Education established the Department of Alternative Education and Lifelong Learning in 2016 to effectively implement alternative education initiatives.
According to Myanmar’s 2014 national census, approximately 2.7 million school-age children were unable to attend school due to various circumstances. Additionally, there were 4.1 million illiterate youth and adults aged 15 and above. — ASH/MKKS
