Austria has partially lifted a strict lockdown and reopened schools after the spread of the coronavirus appeared to slow down in the country.
The lockdown, which started on November 17, imposed strict restrictions on people's outings, as well as operations of non-essential shops and schools.
Except for supermarkets and pharmacies, and some other businesses, shops were not allowed to let customers in and schools had to hold instruction online.
On Monday, elementary and junior high schools resumed in-person classes after new coronavirus infections began to decline.
In the capital, Vienna, children were seen going to school for the first time in about three weeks.
A 9-year-old girl said that she is really happy to attend school again as she is tired of studying at home.
A 11-year-old middle school student said he is excited to see his friends and teachers.
Junior high schools have introduced anti-virus measures, requiring students and teachers to disinfect their hands and wear masks.
Shops were also allowed to open on Monday. But restaurants and tourist hotels will remain closed until January 6.
