China sentences former Interpol chief

A court in China has sentenced a former president of Interpol, Meng Hongwei, to 13-and-a-half years in prison for taking bribes.

Meng was detained in 2018 when he temporarily returned to China from France where Interpol is headquartered. He was subsequently charged with accepting bribes.

A court in the city of Tianjin on Tuesday sentenced Meng to prison and fined him 2 million yuan, or about 290,000 dollars.

Chinese state broadcaster CCTV says it was revealed during the trial that Meng received more than 2 million dollars' worth of money and goods by abusing his authority.

Meng reportedly granted favors to individuals and companies, some while working at the Public Security Ministry.

CCTV says Meng has admitted to the charges, expressed remorse, and will not appeal.

Some observers say Meng's case is linked to political conflict within China. His wife who is said to have been granted asylum in France has argued that her husband was politically persecuted in China.
