Deadly terror attack in Nairobi

16 January

Multiple casualties are being reported after an armed group stormed an upscale hotel and office complex in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi.

The attack began with an explosion in a parking lot of a nearby bank and a suicide bombing in the hotel lobby.

The armed group and security officers then exchanged gunfire, lasting hours.

It's unclear how many were in the group or how many are dead.

Local media quote police as saying 6 people were killed and 30 others injured.

But there are reports the death toll has reached more than a dozen and multiple victims are still trapped inside.

The neighborhood is popular with foreigners. There are reports several of them are among the dead.

Kenya's security authorities are investigating the case as a terror attack.

Somalia-based Islamic militant group Al-Shabab has claimed responsibility.

Kenya has sent its troops to Somalia in a military campaign to sweep out Al-Shabab militants.

The group has been behind a number of attacks in Kenya.

This latest one happened a few kilometers from Westgate Mall. 67 people were killed there in an Al-Shabab attack in 2013.
