THE National Disaster Management Committee’s Vice-Chairs presided over the third coordination meeting of the Disaster Management Centre yesterday.
Union Minister for Home Affairs Lt-Gen Tun Tun Naung who is also Vice-Chair 1 of the National Disaster Management Committee, said the international rescue teams have now departed as they completed their operations while only the medical teams for treatment remain. Efforts should be made to ensure the opening and operations of offices by the end of this month. In rebuilding and repairing the damaged buildings, priority should be given to the restoration of office buildings.
During the maintenance period, temporary offices will be opened, and the destroyed buildings will be divided into three groups such as red, orange and blue-level buildings. The skilled engineers examined the destroyed staff housings in groups.
The livable blue-level employee housing will be repaired to withstand earthquake damage, and efforts will be made to relocate employee families back to their designated places.
The temporary shelters will be rapidly constructed for employees and their families from red and orange-level staff housing, which need to be demolished or extensively repaired. Moreover, arrangements will be made to ensure access to water, electricity, and sanitation.
He continued that living in temporary shelters with tarpaulins is not easy. Therefore, before the rains begin, efforts will continue to construct secure temporary buildings according to each ministry’s requirements to ensure that employees and their families can be relocated to these safer places.
Vice-Chair 2 of the committee Union Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Dr Soe Win then discussed the systematic allocation of international aid and donations and appreciated the work committees for their efforts.
The work committees’ members coordinated the discussion.
The vice-chairs inspected the construction of temporary tents, bathrooms and toilets and access to water and electricity in Wunna Theikdi and Dhana Theikdi wards. — MNA/KTZH
