THE long-term progress and sustainability of a nation depend on the dedication of each generation to its advancement. To secure the future, the youth must be continually nurtured to inherit the nation’s responsibilities. For a country to remain competitive globally, it is essential that the younger generation possesses the capabilities and contributions necessary for national development. Thus, fostering the comprehensive growth and full potential of youth is crucial.

The State Administrative Council’s social objective is “to nurture youth to become physically strong, intellectually capable, morally upright, socially adept and economically empowered young individuals poised to lead the nation’s development efforts”. The government is committed to cultivating well-rounded individuals who excel in all areas – physical, intellectual, ethical, social, and cultural – to ensure their significant role in the country’s progress.

It is important for youth not only to excel academically but also to grow into well-rounded individuals. They must develop a strong sense of patriotism, love for their country, and a deep understanding of the importance of safeguarding national sovereignty and cultural heritage. Additionally, fostering qualities like curiosity, creativity, critical thinking, and the motivation to positively influence society and the environment is essential.

Myanmar’s initiatives to nurture talented young individuals began in 1964 and continued until 1988. After a hiatus starting in 1989, the “Outstanding Youth” programme was revived in 2013, and in 2018, it was rebranded as the “Outstanding Student” programme. However, the project was temporarily halted in the 2019-2020 academic year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It resumed in the 2022-2023 academic year, and the selection of talented students is now underway for the 2024-2025 academic year, with lists being announced by the Higher Education Department and Basic Education Department under the Ministry of Education.

The selection of outstanding students is not solely based on academic performance but also considers their physical health, mental attitude, discipline, knowledge, and overall excellence. This thorough evaluation process takes place across various levels, including school, township, and district, to ensure that only the most exceptional students are chosen.

Being recognized as an outstanding student is a lifelong source of pride. When these distinguished students from different regions meet at prestigious camps, they have the opportunity to build friendships, share knowledge, and learn from each other’s regional experiences. This fosters a greater appreciation of traditional cultures, instils a sense of pride and patriotism, and strengthens their commitment to the nation.
