THE UMS Myitkyina vessel of the Tatmadaw (Navy) arrived at the Thilawa (MITT) Port at 10 am on 23 May, carrying 225 tonnes of cement (4,500 50-kilogramme bags) donated by the Government of India to assist with the reconstruction efforts following the recent earthquake in Myanmar.

 

A formal handover cer­emony for the 225 tonnes of cement was held at Thilawa Port later in the afternoon. During the event, Mr Abhay Thakur, Ambassador of India to Myanmar, delivered a speech explaining the donation of the cement bags.

 

The donation was accept­ed by Yangon Region Chief Minister U Soe Thein. Present at the ceremony were regional government ministers, officials from the Strategic Studies and Training Department under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Department of Disaster Man­agement under the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement, as well as the Chairpersons and members of the Thanlyin District Adminis­tration Body and the Kyauktan Township Administration Body.

 

Following the handover, Chief Minister U Soe Thein expressed his gratitude. Then, the donated cement was loaded onto cargo trucks under the su­pervision of the Yangon Region government and transported to areas affected by the earth­quake. — Zwe Htet Ko (IPRD)/ MKKS
