Indonesia lifts tsunami alert following M7.1 quake

The US Geological Survey says a magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck off Sulawesi Island in Indonesia early Friday. A tsunami alert was issued but later lifted.


The USGS says the quake hit in the Molucca Sea east of Sulawesi at an estimated depth of about 45 kilometers.


Indonesian disaster management officials issued a tsunami alert.


A tsunami roughly 10 centimeters high was observed in northern Sulawesi.


The alert was lifted after two and a half hours.


The authorities plan to investigate whether there is any damage.
