SEVERAL royal meals from the Konbaung era have been rediscovered and recreated to match their original recipes, according to Ko Htaketin Sithu Hein from Queen Pyinsi House.

Taking inspiration from the book titled Maha Satawun by author Win Htut Yan Naing (penname-Nga Kyan Thin), which describes the names of royal meals, and after conducting one-year research with the writer, he was able to identify more than 20 types of royal meals.

"The royal meals of Konbaung have long since disappeared. I would say that they were only eaten by royal family members. Ordinary people didn’t eat them. That is why we carefully researched and rediscovered the lost cuisine so that other people could also eat them," he said after his appraisal work.

These meals include Montkyaleikkyaw, pork and eastern gooseberry dish, and fried shredded sheatfish that were consumed in the palaces during the Bagan and Nyaungyan eras.

"They were the meals of the Yadanabon and Konbaung era. Some of them such as freshwater lobster and fried pork were from the Bagan period," he said. – Thit Taw/ZN
