Torrential rains in southern China have caused landslides and extensive flooding, reportedly leaving at least 13 people dead and 15 missing.
The state-run Xinhua News Agency reported that the continued downpours have wreaked havoc in Meizhou, Guangdong Province, since Sunday. It said five people died and 15 went missing, as of Monday.
Footage released by China Central Television show collapsed roads and wide areas inundated with muddy floodwaters. The image also shows people being rescued by boat.
Landslides also hit neighboring Fujian Province. Xinhua said eight people there were dead as of Tuesday. It also reported there are missing people.
Local authorities are speeding up rescue efforts. Repair work is also underway as the heavy rain caused damage to infrastructure including electricity, communications and other facilities.
