IN a show of solidarity with the people of Myanmar affect­ed by the recent earthquake, Malaysian Foreign Minister Dato’ Seri Mohamad Hasan, Representative of the 2025 ASEAN Chair for Myanmar, and Thai Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa ar­rived in Nay Pyi Taw yester­day on a joint visit.

 

During the visit, the two ministers attended a joint meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where Un­ion Minister and Deputy Prime Minister U Than Swe expressed deep gratitude for their timely support and compassionate response. He acknowledged their presence as a powerful symbol of ASE­AN unity and support for the people of Myanmar, who have endured severe losses in lives and property due to the earth­quake.

 

The Deputy Prime Minis­ter also praised ASEAN mem­ber states for their swift hu­manitarian efforts, including the immediate deployment of search and rescue teams and aid to affected regions. He further called for continued support in the post-emergen­cy phase, highlighting urgent needs such as mobile clinics, medical supplies, water dis­tribution systems, and rescue equipment for long-term re­habilitation efforts.

 

In response, both the Ma­laysian and Thai foreign min­isters reaffirmed their com­mitment to standing together with Myanmar as members of the ASEAN family. They pledged ongoing assistance to address the evolving needs in earthquake-hit areas and em­phasized the importance of effective coordination. They also discussed enhanced col­laboration through the ASE­AN Coordinating Centre for Humanitarian Assistance on Disaster Management (AHA Centre) to ensure timely hu­manitarian response and to prioritize recovery efforts for the affected communities. — MNA/KZL
