Meiktila, 6 May

Meiktila District in the Mandalay Region has successfully planted 15,548 acres of summer sesame—an oilseed crop—surpassing the original target, according to the District Agriculture Department.

To boost sesame yields, which have been lower than expected, officials from the Township Department of Agriculture are actively engaging with local farmers. They are offering support to address challenges in sesame cultivation, including access to technology, capital, agricultural inputs, quality seeds, irrigation, soil management, and pest control.

Under the guidance of the Meiktila District Agriculture Department, the townships of Meiktila, Mahlaing, Thazi, and Wandwin initially set a goal to plant 8,098 acres of summer sesame using water sources from dams and reservoirs. Planting began in the last week of February.

As of now, these townships have cultivated a total of 15,548 acres, far exceeding their initial goal.—Thein Myint Kyaw (Meiktila)
