MYANMAR women’s tennis team ranked third place at the Billie Jean King Cup/ITF World Cup of Tennis competitions held from 23 to 29 Novem­ber, in Bahrain.

 

In Group D, Myanmar teamed up with Maldives, Tajikistan, Bhutan and Iraq, and beat Maldives 2-1, Iraq 3-0, Bhu­tan 3-0 and Tajikistan 3-0, and reached the semifinal as the group first with four wins. During the semifinal with the Northern Mariana Islands, Nilar Win won the first single 6-3, 6-3, and Htay Htay Myint lost the second single 1-6, 0-6. In the doubles, Nilar Win and Thiri Zun faced the loss with 1-6 and 3-6.

 

Head coach Daw Kyi Mya Zaw of the Myan­mar Tennis Federation, and tennis players Ma Nilar Win, Ma Htay Htay Win, Ma Htet Htet Wai, Ma Thiri Zun and Ma Han Thu Thu Htet arrived back in Yangon yesterday morning. They were welcomed back by Myanmar Tennis Federation Vice-President U Myo Thura, executive members of the federation and athletes.

A total of 17 countries, including 11 Asian countries – Myanmar, Vietnam, Laos, the Phil­ippines, Brunei – and host country Bahrain par­ticipated in the competitions. — Arkar Lin/KTZH
