BOOKS are powerful tools that spark critical thinking and guide people back to positive attitudes and values. They help readers reflect on real life and the society around them. Behind every book lies the hard work and dedication of authors who pour time and energy into compiling ideas and sharing insights, truths, and often overlooked perspectives with readers. While readers easily absorb the knowledge from these books, it’s important to recognize the creative effort involved in writing them.

For this reason, respecting copyright laws – both written and unwritten – is essential. Plagiarism should never be tolerated, except when citing references to support arguments or add credibility to the content. Every book, regardless of genre, represents the unique voice and knowledge of its author. Acknowledging their effort is part of supporting intellectual and creative integrity. Writers aim to spread their wisdom and experience, and this can only happen in a fair environment that honours original work.

In recognition of the importance of books and authors, UNESCO established 23 April as World Book and Copyright Day. This date holds symbolic significance as it marks the death anniversaries of renowned literary figures like William Shakespeare, Miguel de Cervantes, and Inca Garcilaso de la Vega. UNESCO’s General Conference in Paris in 1995 chose this day to celebrate books worldwide and encourage universal access to reading.

Each year, events take place across the globe to celebrate the role of books as cultural bridges between generations and across borders. On this day, UNESCO, together with international organizations representing publishers, booksellers, and libraries, selects a city to serve as the World Book Capital. This city carries forward the mission of promoting reading and book culture for an entire year through creative initiatives.

The theme for World Book and Copyright Day in 2025 is “Read Your Way”. This theme inspires readers to explore books in ways that suit their interests and lifestyles. It also underscores the need to make reading more inclusive and enjoyable for everyone, while encouraging lifelong learning. Individuals have to recognize only when books appear one after another under copyright will literate communities emerge.

That is why by respecting book copyrights, both authors and readers benefit. It ensures the sustainability of literature as a meaningful tool for education, culture, and personal growth. Participating in World Book and Copyright Day is not just a tribute to authors – it’s a commitment to building a knowledgeable, thoughtful, and forward-looking society.
