A stake driving ceremony was held for the construction of a bridge on the Bago River (Myo Oo Kin) at the project site in Bago on the Thamein Baran Road side of the river bank, yesterday morning. The project is being implemented by the Special Bridge 9 team, Bridge Construction Group 3 of the Department of Bridge under the Ministry of Construction.
At the ceremony, Union Minister for Construction U Han Zaw said his ministry is building and maintaining basic infrastructure such as roads and bridges, buildings, and housing for urban development.
“Countrywide, the Ministry of Construction has upgraded 330 miles of concrete roads, 385 miles of asphalt roads, and 1,030 miles of nylon-asphalt roads, covering 144 union roads.
The Department of Roads has laid and maintained more than 26,000 miles of roads, of which 1,336 miles are in Bago Region. The Yangon-Mandalay and Yangon-Pyay roads — the two main roads passing through Bago Region — are being upgraded to four-laneroads through BOT (build, operate, transfer) companies,” said the minister.
“The Department of Bridge has constructed and maintained more than 560 bridges, measuring 180 ft. and above in length, across the country, of which 43 have beenbuilt in Bago Region, while 11 are still under construction,” he said.
“The Bago River (Myo Oo Kin) Bridge, for which stakes are being driven today, is located on the Sein Tha Lyaung and Thamein Baran bypass roads, which allow vehicles to avoid downtown Bago. It will be a two-lane reinforced concrete bridge measuring 158 meters, or 518 ft. in length.
Once the bridge is completed, locals residing in areas around the Bago bypass road can be reached easily via the Yangon-Mandalay old road, and their education, health, social, and economic status will improve,” said the Union Minister.
Afterwards, Bago Region Chief Minister U Win Thein spoke about the improvement in road transportation due to construction of roads and bridges and regional development status.
Later, Bago Region’s Minister for Security and Border Affairs, Col. Hla Myo Shwe, Minister for Planning and Finance U Nyunt Shwe, Minister for Industry and Transport U Than Win, and Minister for Natural Resources and Environment Dr. Saw Nyo Win, Bago Region Hluttaw representatives U Nyunt Swe and U Kyaw Min San, and Amyotha Hluttaw representative Dr. San Maung Maung took their positions for the stake-driving ceremony and sprinkled scented water. Union Minister U Han Zaw, Bago Region Chief Minister, and Bago Region Hluttaw Speaker U Khin Maung Yin then pressed a button to drive a Stand Pipe with Vibro Hammer into the ground and sprinkled scented water on it.
After the ceremony, the Union Minister and his team went to inspect the section-wise concrete laying of the 4-mile long Bago-Shan Ywa Gyi-Papinchaung village road. Once it is completed, The road will directly benefit 7,953 people from 1,730 households in 6 villages of 3 villagetracts.
The Union Minister and his team also inspected the laying of an asphalt concrete on the Bago Town bypass road by Max Highway Co. Ltd, and road-widening work being conducted on the No. 2 and No. 4 roads that connect Bago and Yangon regions. — MNA (Translated by Zaw Min)
