Typhoon may force suspension of Tokyo trains

East Japan Railway Company says it may suspend some train services this weekend as Typhoon Hagibis is forecast to hit the Tokyo area on Saturday and Sunday.

The railway operator says it will announce its decision on its website on Friday.

Four major Japanese telecom operators are preparing for possible service disruptions. The firms say they are getting ready to deploy mobile base stations and power supply vehicles. They are also working to secure enough staff so they can quickly deal with any problems.

Telecom operator NTT East says it is taking measures to protect base stations from water damage.

A typhoon that struck the country last month caused massive blackouts in Chiba Prefecture, near Tokyo, and many people were unable to use their mobile phones.
