Vehicle explosion in Syria kills 40

A vehicle has exploded in a Turkish-controlled city in northwestern Syria, killing 40 people. Turkey blames a Kurdish militant group for the incident.

The vehicle loaded with oil exploded on Tuesday at a market in the center of Afrin, about 20 kilometers from the border with Turkey.

Turkish defense ministry officials say the victims include 11 children.

No one has claimed responsibility. But Turkish security forces suspect that the rival Kurdish militant group YPG planted a bomb in the vehicle. They detained the driver, and an investigation is underway.
