WHO preparing to send research team to Wuhan

The World Health Organization is preparing to send a team of researchers to the Chinese city of Wuhan as early as next month to look into the origins of COVID-19.

A WHO spokesperson told NHK on Wednesday that the international team is working on logistical arrangements to travel to China as soon as possible, hopefully in January.

The research team also plans to investigate what happened at the beginning of the outbreak.

In July, the UN organization sent two officials to Beijing to arrange a survey in Wuhan. One of the officials, Peter Embarek, is an expert on animal-derived infectious diseases. He spoke to NHK earlier this month.

Embarek said the WHO needs to carry out a more detailed investigation of the first cases. He also pointed to the need to interview people to identify all the cases in and around Wuhan.
