A hand grenade dating back to World War One has been found in a pile of potatoes at a chip factory in Hong Kong.

The grenade was found on Saturday when a worker noticed a round-shaped metal object while screening potatoes at a factory of Calbee Four Seas, a Hong Kong subsidiary of Japanese snack maker Calbee.

A police bomb squad identified the metal object as a hand grenade and defused it. There were no reports of injuries or damage to buildings. Police say the device is believed to have been manufactured by Germany during World War One and was in a shipment of potatoes imported from France.

Police say the grenade weighs about one kilogram and measures eight centimeters in diameter, and that it was covered with dirt.
