Youth Integrity Camp 2019, a collaboration between the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) and the Ministry of Education (MoE) with technological assistance from UNODC (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime), was launched at Thingaha Hotel in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday.
Dr. Myo Thein Gyi’s speech
The Union Minister for Education, Dr. Myo Thein Gyi, first addressed the ceremony held in the hotel’s Grand Ballroom. He explained that the camp is prepared for hosting 127 teachers and students from ten universities and colleges of Meiktila, Yamethin and Toungoo townships.
The Union Minister said the camp aims to increase youth-inclusivity in combating corruption and to promote a mindset for honesty and righteousness in young people.
He said his ministry has formed a corruption prevention unit (CPU) and will implement the Civil Services Personnel Law, its bylaw and to carry out appropriate legal affairs between departments.
Dr. Myo Thein Gyi said MoE is collaborating with ACC to swiftly finalize and publish a teachers’ guidebook for promoting honesty in students (primary level) and are working on a middle-school level guidebook as well.
He expressed his belief that these books will bring enormous benefits to the nation and become a historical milestone as being the first books of their kind published as a mechanism for pushing back corruption in Myanmar.
U Aung Kyi’s speech
ACC Chairman U Aung Kyi was next to deliver a speech. He said the nature of eradicating corruption is a long struggle between honesty and dishonesty. He said honesty has risen from a long period of hiding by the increased support of the public. However, dishonesty is hitting back in various forms to preserve itself and it will take a long time before honesty can fully prevail, said U Aung Kyi.
He said it is important for the nation that honesty triumphs in the next generation. He said young people all have fundamental skills to promote a culture of honesty in every level of society, and thus, it is important to properly assist them.
Afterwards, US Ambassador Mr. Scot Marciel gave an address where he highlighted the importance of educating future generations in order to build a sustained effort to fight corruption.
UNODC Programme Manager Ms. Marie-Pegie Cauchois also delivered a speech, saying involving youths directly in anti-graft efforts will be a major advance in addressing inequality and corruption. The ACC Secretary and members, the Deputy Attorney-General, directors-general from the MoE and ACC, and officials from UNODC attended the launch ceremony. —MNA (Translated by Zaw Htet Oo)
